Oxidation-reduction Potentials and the Possible Respiratory Significance of the Pigment of the Nudibranch Chromodoris Zebra

چکیده

1. Oxidation-reduction potential methods have been applied to a study of the blue-purple pigment present in solution in the blood and in the tissue cells of the nudibranch Chromodoris zebra. 2. The blue-purple pigment and its yellow reduction product form a reversible system whose E(o)' = x0.102 volts at pH 7.0 and whose valence change from oxidant to reductant appears to be one. 3. The system is unlike oxyhemoglobin-hemoglobin in the mode of oxygen transfer. Its rôle as a possible respiratory material is discussed.

On the Control of the Response to Shading in the Branchiæ of Chromodoris

The branchial plumes of Chromodoris respond, by contraction, to a decrease in light intensity. This response is obliterated by high temperatures (above 32 degrees ) and by direct sunlight, and is possible only within a limited range of alkalinity of the sea water. A concealing retraction of the whole gill-crown is reflexly determined by the self-contraction of the individual plumes under "optim...

assortive mating in Chromodoris. If the population is composed of a mixture of pure lines, then one effect of this type of copulation may well be, as in Paramecium (Jennings), the prevention of interlinear crossing. Certain generally accepted ideas regarding the life history of nudibranchs may tend to favor this view. The evidence for the presence of pure lines in the Chromodoris stock is, howe...

Deoxymanoalides from the nudibranch Chromodoris willani.

Two sesterterpenes, deoxymanoalide (1) and deoxysecomanoalide (2), were isolated from the nudibranch Chromodoris willani collected in Okinawa and their structures determined on the basis of spectroscopic data and chemical conversions. The mollusk feeds on a sponge containing manoalide (3) and secomanoalide (4) and is likely to biotransform them into 1 and 2. Both 1 and 2 showed moderate antimic...

Decomposition and Analysis of Driving Forces of GHG Emissions and Emission Reduction Potentials in Iran

Climate change cannot control unless by reduction of GHG emissions to secure level, therefore it is important to identify driving forces and possible scenarios based on targets. In this research, the Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index decomposition approach in combination with Extended Kaya Identity (EKI) are applied to investigate five factors could affect emissions during 1971-2012 in Iran. Thes...

Pigment epithelium-derived factor: clinical significance in estrogen-dependent tissues and its potential in cancer therapy

Pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) is a glycoprotein that belongs to the family of non-inhibitory serpins. The broad spectrum of PEDF biological activity is evident when considering its effects in promoting cell survival and proliferation, as well as its antiangiogenic, antitumor, and anti-metastatic properties. Although the structural domains of the PEDF gene that mediate such diverse ef...
